Why might I need root canal treatment again?
This is one of the most common questions patients ask when advised to undergo root canal treatment for a tooth that has already received it once. It’s a reasonable question with several potential explanations.
If a previously treated tooth is found to be infected again, it may be due to one of the following reasons:

Persistent Infection: The tooth may have been carrying an underlying infection that has only recently become apparent. Your Endodontist will discuss the specific factors involved.

Protective Barrier Compromise: The protective seal around the tooth may have been breached, allowing bacteria to enter. This can occur if a crown or filling in place is leaking due to new tooth decay.

Crack in the Tooth: A crack in the tooth can act as an entry point for bacteria, leading to re-infection of the root canal system.

While a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment is less prone to infection, it’s not immune. If your Endodontist recommends re-treatment, it’s likely because infection has occurred despite prior intervention.
What are the alternatives to endodontic re-treatment?
Depending on the nature of the infection, your Endodontist will discuss alternative options and provide guidance on their relative success rates. Possible alternatives may include apical surgery, partial re-treatment of the root filling, or in some cases, tooth extraction.
How long does re-treatment take?
As with initial root canal treatment, re-treatment can typically require 2–3 visits to ensure thorough care and monitoring.
What are the chances of success with re-treatment?
As with any procedure, outcomes can vary depending on individual factors. Re-treatments may have different prognoses compared to initial treatment, depending on the case.
Endodontic re-treatment may be an option for preserving a tooth that might otherwise require extraction. Your endodontist can discuss whether this is a suitable option for your case.

Most patients can safely undergo endodontic treatment. However, those with heart valve conditions or who have had heart valve surgery should inform their clinician before treatment. Patients with prosthetic joint replacements within the past two years may require additional precautions.

Pain Management & Aftercare
Modern root canal treatment is performed under local anaesthesia, and most patients find it comparable to having a filling. Treatment helps relieve pain caused by infection or inflammation.

In many cases, yes. A crown helps to strengthen and improve the appearance of the treated tooth. Your dentist will advise on the best restoration.
